Performances of light and heavy-duty road vehicles

UTAC places its road complex and safe facilities at the disposal of  automakers, vehicle body builders, equipment manufacturers, institutional bodies and individuals for the purpose of :

  • Evaluating braking performances assesment in the eyes of regulation.
  • Determining manoeuvrability.
  • Checking speeds (speedometer, speed control systems)
  • Evaluating static and/or dynamic stability and road holding
  • Benchmarking the competition

Experimented drivers and technicians are available to help you reach your goal by implementing adequate tests.

Braking performances :

We implement 2 levels of test

Vehicle being tested on the low-grip track

  • Complete tests for new vehicles requiring approval according to European regulations (directives and/or regulations)*, national regulations (French Orders) as well as Taiwanese, Chinese, Australian requirements, etc.
  • Partial tests on already-approved vehicles for comparative purposes. These also apply to vehicles subject to a French Individual Type Approval  (RTI - réception à titre isolé).

These tests are performed on dedicated tracks in the road complex, including :

The low friction track on which we quantify efficiency of Anti-Blocking-Systems (ABS).

- Slopes of 20% and 12% on which we measure parking brake efficiency.

The measuring equipment used and the equipment fitted to the vehicles allow us to determine the following characteristics with accuracy : speeds, stopping distances and decelerations on the multiple configurations of the braking circuit (in normal or failure modes).

Our facilities allow us to test all kinds of road vehicles with different types of braking systems :

  • Inertia (light trailer, caravan, and others),
  • Hydraulic (private cars, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles and others).
  •  Pneumatic and hydro-pneumatic (HGVs, semi-trailers, trailers and others).

Manoeuvrability

In order to comply with the current regulations (European Directive 70311/EEC and/or European regulation ECE 79), we can measure the steering forces generated at the steering wheel when turning in a circle, including when the power steering has failed.

We can verify that combinations of vehicles are capable of manoeuvring in a strictly defined corridor.

Speed-related performances

We perform tests in order to verify that speedometers display values within the statutory tolerances for the speed range in question, in accordance with European regulation ECE 39 and European directive 75/443/EEC (amended).

We verify maximum speeds according to the procedures defined in European directive 95/1/EC (amended) and European regulation ECE 68.

We validate fixed and adjustable speed limiters according to the protocols defined in European regulation ECE 89 and European directive 92/24/EEC (amended).

We determine the acceleration abilities of vehicles by displaying times :

  • From a standing start and/or.
  • Between two speeds.

Static stability

 Vehicle during an overturning test

We also offer an overturning platform on which we can define the maximum angle of tilt that can be achieved before a vehicle overturns, from the moment a wheel is raised. We refer to the procedures defined in the NF EN 1846-2 standard (for fire-fighting vehicles), European regulation ECE 111 (tank vehicles) and directive 2001/85/EC (public transport vehicles).

Dynamic stability or road holding

On the development site, our drivers perform manoeuvres to evaluate the dynamic stability and road holding of vehicles. You can choose different configurations, including :

Lane-changing test

  • Lane-change (single change of lane)
  • Chicane (double change of lane)
  • Slalom
  • Corner
  • Circle (continuous cornering)
  • Etc.

Since 2009, we have got an automatic steering control device to be used for evaluating electronic stability control equipment (ESC, ESP, etc.) according to international regulations.

During the performance of these tests, we can install various sensors for real-time data acquisition. The parameters measured relate to :

  • Driving speeds, wheel speeds, angular velocities
  • Angles (steering lock, pitch, roll, yaw)
  • Accelerations (longitudinal, transversal)
  • Displacements (suspension travel, pedal journey)
  • Pressure in brake circuits and tyres
  • Force and torque
  • Temperatures
  • Times
