 History

History of the motor-racing track.

Annular speed-test track

Alexandre Lamblin, a manufacturer and press baron, was the instigator of this project. He purchased 650 hectares of land on the St.Eutrope plateau as the site for his project. The race track was designed by Raymond Jamin and the project included an annular speed-test track of 2548.24 metres in length.

Its structure consisted of the first reinforced cement track supported by a cement framework featuring 3,300 posts, 8,000 girders and 7,000 cross-ties.

Work on the annular speed-test track began in February 1924 and was finished 6 months later. The first competition organised by the Automobile Club de France was held on 4-5 October 1924 and the first Grand Prix to be held at the Autodrome took place on 17 May 1925.

Road Circuit

On 1st December 1924, the decision was made to build a 9.5 km road circuit. Work began on 31 January 1925 and the circuit, surfaced with with Cold Asphalt (COLAS), was handed over five months later.
