Autonomous Mobility: Driving phase of the SMACS program begins on UTAC’s private roads

The vehicle is configured as a passenger transport or shuttle, with windows along the side and an elevated roof, possibly for sensors or additional equipment. It is parked on an urban street, with trees and buildings in the background.

As part of the France 2030 initiative, UTAC is actively contributing to the SMACS project, which aims to advance automated, connected, and low-carbon mobility services. This program is supported by Bpifrance.

SMACS is a collaborative effort involving UTAC, RATP (the operator), and Milla (the autonomous shuttle manufacturer). Its objective is to develop and evaluate a driverless, supervisor-monitored autonomous mobility service.

The current phase involves two autonomous shuttles operating on UTAC’s private roads in a real environment at the Linas-Montlhéry site. Unlike a closed test track, this area accommodates other vehicle traffic, enabling more realistic operating conditions.

  • Fully launched in early March, the service is currently running in a controlled setting and will be open to UTAC employees and visitors starting in May.
  • A second phase is scheduled for early 2026 and will be deployed in the city of Le Plessis-Trévise (near Paris), operating on public roads.

UTAC’s role includes providing infrastructure and test environments, conducting safety and cybersecurity analyses, and supporting the evaluation process through the preparation of assessment reports by third-party evaluators.
