UTAC Aids New EV Thermal & Power Regulations

UTAC contributes to two new regulations regarding thermal propagration and system power for electric vehicles
At UTAC, we’re proud to contribute directly to the development of international vehicle regulations through our active role in working groups under the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29).
On April 24, 2025, the WP.29 published the adopted proposals from its 195th session. Among the highlights:
Safety of the Electric Powertrain (ECE R100 Revision 5)
This latest series introduces a thermal propagation test procedure aimed at ensuring occupant safety when a forced thermal runaway occurs in a battery cell during active driving.
UTAC has been directly involved in this major development, notably by conducting evacuation tests in 2024 as defined by the Plateforme automobile (PFA).
📅 This revision will enter into force on 26 September 2025, with mandatory application for new type approvals from September 2027.
System Power Determination for Electrified Vehicles (ECE R177)
This brand-new regulation defines how to measure the maximum power of hybrid and pure electric vehicles equipped with multiple electric machines, depending on their architecture.
📅 R177 will also enter into force on 26 September 2025 and is expected to be included in EURO 7 requirements for new types from end of November 2026 and all types from end of November 2027
