Technician - Powertrain Emissions

Job Description

Purpose

The role will be responsible for all aspects of vehicle emissions testing from vehicle preparation, equipment installation, testing, formulating and validating test results. Maintaining and calibrating all test equipment and working to high quality systems and health and safety procedures. The role is based on a 40hr week with early and late shifts and the possibility of overtime. All testing will be performed within our Variable Temperature Emissions Chamber (VTEC2) for heavy duty vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a wide variety of vehicles for chassis dynamometer testing
  • Perform installation work to fuel and exhaust systems including connecting sample pipes and other instrumentation/logging equipment
  • Install vehicles onto chassis dynamometer and connect analytical and computer software equipment used for testing
  • Perform the emissions tests and drive the vehicles to the desired drive cycles 
  • Collate test results from analytical and logging equipment  
  • Validate test results from analytical and logging equipment
  • Maintain and calibrate all test equipment
  • Develop improved systems of work, installation of equipment and testing methods
  • Work to UTAC high quality standards and health and safety procedures  
  • Liaise with Propulsion Vehicle Engineering and work closely with customers
  • Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC colleagues at all times 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • GSCE grades or equivalent
  • Mechanical/PC qualification
  • Engineering apprenticeship related to motor vehicles (preferred)

Core competencies:

  • Good understanding of basic motor vehicle fundamentals
  • Automotive diagnostic or testing experience
  • Dilute emissions systems (CVS)/ Particulate measurement experience (desirable)
  • Instrumentation experience (desirable)
  • Experience with fault finding techniques (desirable)
  • Electrical/electronic experience (desirable)

  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications 
  • Methodical and logical approach to all aspects of work
  • Fabrication skills (desirable)

Other:

  • Due to environmental test conditions candidate must pass full annual medical
  • Flexibility to travel as and when required
  • Full UK driving licence & own transport (UTAC Millbrook is not easily assessable via public transport)
  • SC clearance or ability to achieve this (UK national with residency in the UK for the last 5 years)
  • Willing to undergo a Criminal Disclosure check
  • NOTE: This position be will based on-site
